They were sent by God for corrective purposes: to call for repentance during rebellion, encourage during times of judgment, and guide God's people toward restoration.

What’s the Difference Between the Major Prophets and Minor Prophets?

Are the major prophets more important than the minor prophets? That’s a common question asked and the answer is clear: not at a all. The division between Major and Minor Prophets is very old and was based strictly on the length of the books. Since biblical books were written on scrolls, they had a size limit. Because the writings of all twelve Minor Prophets fi t well on one scroll, they became one unit. Apart from being shorter, the Minor Prophets are the same type of prophetic literature as the Major Prophets.

5 Main Reasons Why You (and your small group) Should Study the Major Prophets:

Why should Christians today read, study, and be concerned with the message of each of these books?

  • They anticipate the coming of the Messiah, who has saved us from evil, made a new relationship possible between God and us, and given us a new heart.
  • They call God’s people to trust in God’s care and provision and remind us that he is able and willing to come through for us.
  • They call God’s people to repent from ignoring, challenging, and disobeying God.
  • Their words and actions instruct us about the ways in which God deals with his people.
  • By seeing the world from God’s perspective and understanding the ways in which God deals with his people, we become better equipped to discern our times and understand God’s will for the church today.

Discussion/Reflection Questions for the Major Prophets Pamphlet

  1. Read Pgs. 1-2 (Importance of the Major Prophets). Many believers are intimidated by the idea of reading the Major Prophets. What are 5 main reasons to do so? What would you say to someone that told you the Major Prophets aren't relevant to us today? Why are you personally interested in studying the Major Prophets?
  2. Read Pg. 3 (Ministries of the Major Prophets). God entrusted each of these prophets with words of comfort and instruction to communities of people turned out of their own homes and culture. Why does God choose to speak through us? Can you think of a moment God used someone to speak to you? What was one moment that God used you to share his comfort and love with someone?
  3. Read Pg. 4 (Among Giants). We still experience rebellion, danger, and disobedience, personally and on a global scale. What current events are going on right now and how should we pray in light of God's messages through the Major Prophets? Take a moment and pray that God would intervene in these circumstances right now.
  4. Read Pg. 6 (Christ in the Major Prophets). This section reveals key scriptures from the Major Prophets that prophecy the coming of Christ. How does knowing that these prophecies were made 700-500 years before Christ impact you?
  5. Read Pg. 8-9 (Called By God). Each of the Major Prophets were set apart and called to specific destinies to reflect God's glory and personality, despite their faults and failures. What is God calling you to do? What insecurities and shortcomings do you need to place before God?
  6. Read Pg. 10 (Overview of the Major Prophets). One of the main reasons we should study the Major Prophets is to learn about God's character and attributes; what characteristics of God do you see in the major themes? (2nd column in chart) Which of these attributes of God have you experienced, and how?
  7. Read Pg. 11-12 (The Challenges of the Prophets). Reflect on the 3 challenges of the prophets. What things or individuals do we sometimes put ahead of God? What attitudes and behaviors is God challenging you to change today?

on 7/1/2016 Great Overview
The major prophets are not taught on frequently, as a result, many Christians do not really understand the amazing verses contained in these books of the Bible. The pamphlet that Rose Publishing has put together can help significantly with starting to dive into the section of the Bible known as the Major Prophets (Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, and Daniel). The pamphlet starts by showing different reasons to study these books of the Bible. One of the things that is beneficial to the reader is the way each prophets’ ministry is explained by showing the timeline, the location and audience, as well as historical context of each prophets’ ministry. Another thing that is beneficial to the reader is how the pamphlet shows the variety of circumstances that God sent these prophets to minister in. Perhaps the most significant and beneficial thing is this pamphlet is how it shows prophecies that were fulfilled by Jesus Christ. Rose Publishing provided me with an advanced reader copy.
on 11/2/2015 Product Review: Major Prophets
Are the Old Testament writings of Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, and Daniel still relevant for us today? Rose Publishing has recently released a pamphlet entitled, “Major Prophets” that identifies the importance of these Old Testament writers. These Major Prophets’ writings are significant because of their anticipation of the Messiah, faith in God, their pleas for God’s people to repent. Furthermore, we are given insight to how God responds to His people through their words and actions. This pamphlet explains the difference between Major and Minor Prophets and identifies that date of ministries, location, audience, and historical content. Another important feature that this pamphlet provides is a list of prophesies and fulfillment of Christ with associate scriptural references. Historical perspectives for each Major Prophet is also provided for us to understand the challenges that these writers faced during tumultuous times. As a bonus, Rose Publishing offers guidelines for deeper understanding of the books written by these Major Prophets. This pamphlet is a great reference when studying the books of the Major Prophets. My personal recommendation for the use of the pamphlet is as a quick reference guide. This would be great in small Bible Study groups or Adult Sunday School classes. It is a nice layout and easy to follow. I definitely would recommend this pamphlet to leaders or theologians.
on 10/26/2015 Keeping Prophets, Prophecies & Circumstances Straight!
I find this pamphlet on the Major Prophets to be exceedingly helpful. One of the particularly useful aspects of it is the map, where the successive empires are shown: the outlines of the Assyrian and Babylonian Empires are superimposed over the general map, where one can view the entire Mediterranean area comprised of its numerous countries, with little Israel and Judah highlighted, as well: I have always found this aspect a little confusing, so, here is visual clarification! Rose Publishing pamphlets often utilize tables, and the ones here, along with a timeline, help us keep prophets, prophecies and groups to whom they are given, all clear. The introduction, stating the purpose for the prophecies. along with reasons to read them, also provides motivation to the reluctant reader. This is a splendid aid to the study of the longer prophetical books. I thoroughly recommend the it and plan to purchase copies. I received a pamphlet in return for a frank review.
on 10/10/2015 Compact and brief
This 12 page pamphlet is like a CliffNotes study guide for the Major Prophets Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, and Daniel. These four prophets ministered at times of great social turmoil. It gives brief factual information about the approximate time and location of their ministry as well as the historical perspective. A colorful chart showing the various kings of Judah and Israel as well as foreign powers that interacted with God’s chosen people. When teaching a book of the bible it is helpful to find a source which will give you some valuable information in a nutshell. For example as I taught the book of Daniel over a twelve-week period. This resource would have been helpful to give me a global view of happening in the different territories. When doing an in-depth study it is hard to find time to research the other books that share the same span of history. Now as I teach Gospel of Matthew I can use this same pamphlet to find references to the Messiah and the fulfillment through Jesus Christ. [Advanced reader review]
