Biography of the General Editor of Christianity, Cults and Religions

Paul Carden is a longtime specialist in the field of cults and new religions around the world. He is Executive Director of the Centers for Apologetics Research (CFAR), and general editor of Christianity, Cults and Religions. He is former co-host of the nationwide "Bible Answer Man" radio program. Paul has devoted nearly 30 years of his life to cult-related research and outreach in Latin America, Africa, eastern Europe, and the former Soviet Union. In 1980, Paul joined the Christian Research Institute (CRI) under its founder, Walter Martin. For six of his fifteen years at CRI Paul served as a missionary in Sao Paulo, Brazil, and for six years he co-hosted the live, nationwide "Bible Answer Man" radio broadcast alongside Ron Rhodes, Robert M. Bowman, Jr., Kenneth Samples, and other noted apologists. During his time at CRI he was also the ministry's director of international outreach and a senior editor of the Christian Research Journal (1989-1995).

The pamphlet also contains information that addresses how to become a Christian and what other groups may teach about Jesus with a verse-by-verse biblical response.

on 8/27/2013 Provides a concise and accurate summary
General editor Paul Carden has once again produced a very helpful pamphlet in this expanded and revised edition. People often wonder or ask how various cults and religions originated and what they believe. This provides a concise and accurate summary of their founders, their key beliefs, and how these differ from biblical Christianity, as well as other pertinent information. The material is easy to read and to understand. I recommend this valuable resource to Christian bookstores, pastors, and to Christians of every age. My teenage grandson reviewed the material and stated, “It's very important for all believers to understand how biblical Christianity differs from cults and world religions. It really opened my eyes to these other beliefs. (Review originally posted 5/12/2010)

One reason I use Rose is because I trust their spiritual integrity. I can depend on their products to be biblically correct. My wife and I teach a class for new believers, those coming back to church and those who were never discipled or mentored. Rose Publishing products allow us to put tools in their hands that will help them to continue to grow long after our 12 week class ends. Our favorite tools are The Christianity, Cults and Religions pamphlet because our students can tell at a glance why we believe what we believe. We also use The Bible Translation Comparison pamphlet quite frequently. Our students love these tools and with Rose's many sales and coupons we can afford to give them away.

In over three decades of cult studies, I’ve never encountered a guide on the cults and false religions as concise as this one. In a day of information-overload, this helpful guide clearly distinguishes the truth of Christianity from the counterfeits. I recommend it highly (Review orginally posted on 3/31/2010).

Having worked with Paul Carden for years — including as long-time colleagues on the popular Bible Answer Man radio broadcast — I can say without reservation that there is no one better qualified to oversee the production of Christianity, Cults, & Religions. His research is first-rate, and his ability to sift the most important facts from a mountain of cult data will no doubt be appreciated by the many readers of this fine publication. Christians need to know what they believe and why. They also need good advice on sharing the Gospel with people from other religions. Paul Carden's Christianity, Cults & Religions DVD does the best job I have seen for fulfilling these crucial needs in the church today. (Originaly posted on 7/8/2010)

The pamphlet you graciously sent to Jessie and me is the best compendium of the cults I have seen. It is tremendously useful and something I wish I could have had in my years in the pastorate and as a military chaplain. Although we study the cults in Seminary it is hardly to our credit that we tend to forget the depth of the errors when we meet nice people who believe very bad things. Perhaps Mormonism is the best example. I was stationed with a Mormon Chaplain who constantly wanted to share the pulpit with me. Although I resisted him and tried to tell him why, he was so nice, and appeared to be just like the rest of the 35 chaplains on the base. When the Birch Society was strong in California, many Mormons were in the society and the people of my congregation began to look on them as "just like us." Such a pamphlet as this would have been a great help. Thanks for sharing it with us. May God Bless Your Work! (Review originally posted on 6/16/2010)

Let me start right off by saying that the resource I'm about to review is very near and dear to my heart. This is a piece of nostalgia from my very early Christian days. I purchased what was probably the 1st or 2nd edition of Rose's chart of Christianity, cults and religions at a Bible bookstore in Fayetteville, NC as a brand new Christian and absolutely devoured the information in it for years. It has helped me in countless ways both in distinguishing my new found faith from false teachings around the world and also helping to prepare me with good solid answers during discussions on religion with friends, fellow servicemen and family members. I still have the old, tattered and faded copy from all those years ago. I was blessed by Rose Publishing to be provided the 7th edition of Christianity, Cults and Religions free of charge in exchange for a written review. Wow, they certainly have come along way in updating this guide. Here are some additions that make this worth every penny you'll pay for one:
  • Pictures of group leaders have been added in and around the descriptions of each group. This helps those of us who are more visually oriented.
  • Charts of the beliefs and doctrines of different religions. For me, a real chart and map geek, I love this feature. This helps put things in an orderly fashion making it easy to quickly understand how one group is either similar to different from Biblical Christianity.
  • Breakdown of the difference between Sunni and Shi'a Islam. This is a much needed feature in today's world. The world, and especially the Christian world, has had to come face to face with the worlds fastest growing religion, Islam. Understanding the very important differences between it's two main sects is critical as we interact with the people of this religion and culture.
  • Groups, religions, cults added: Sikhism, Kabbalah Centre, Nation of Islam, Wicca, Seventh-Day Adventism, Soka Gakkai International
  • Groups, religions, cults removed (from the 1996 version I have, at least): Armstrongism, Spiritualism (Spiritism), Nichiren Shoshu Buddhism

Overall, a very well laid out pamphlet full of very good basic information. This is the perfect material to tuck inside your Bible or Bible case and review every so often so you are ready to "give a defense for the hope that lies within you" (1 Peter 3:15) when you interact with others who ascribe to some or all of these beliefs. I highly recommend virtually any Rose resource, but I can definitely say that the Christianity, cults and religions booklet is a must have. The apologetics novice to the apologetics expert can benefit from this material and I commend it to you. (Review originally posted 8/16/2010)
