5 Reasons to Study Christian Symbols

  1. Symbols can point you to Jesus—Some churches have a large cross near the front of their sanctuary. During church services, a symbol like the cross can help people stay focused on worshipping the Lord. Symbols themselves are not to be worshipped, but they can help us remember what is important.
  2. Symbols can remind people of God's truth and promises—In Genesis, God used a rainbow as a visual reminder of his covenant that he would never flood the entire earth again. Jesus repeatedly used parables and symbols to talk about God's Kingdom.
  3. Symbols help communicate complex ideas—Especially when it comes to abstract or complicated concepts like the trinity, symbols can be of great help. Visual designs can quickly communicate an idea or concept that may be difficult to explain with words.
  4. Symbols help us find deeper meanings—Have you ever walked into a sanctuary or church and seen images of keys or stained glass scenes of bread loaves and fish? Maybe in a classical painting you've seen the letters "INRI" above an image of Jesus. Symbols are a powerful means of expression, and understanding them can bring depth and understanding to many great works of art and history, like architecture, archaeology, paintings, sculpture, and more!
  5. Symbols can help create unity among believers—Throughout history, Christians have faced persecution. Christian symbols, like the fish, were historically used to help Christians safely identify one another. In other settings, symbols not only state who believers are, but whose they are. It's a symbol of dedication to Jesus Christ.

on 8/17/2016 Christian Symbols Pamphlet
Christian Symbols have been used for centuries in the vast history of Christianity as a visual design or logo. You may see them on Bibles, robes the priest wear, or Church Buildings. In third world countries, symbols may be the only way that you can tell who is a believer of Christ. Just as the cross has been used to represent Christianity, the Christian “fish” has been used as bumper stickers to signify that “I’m a believer in Jesus and in addition, that I belong to our Lord, Jesus Christ.” In this beloved Rose Publishing pamphlet you will see 50 symbols and their meanings with full color illustrations some of which I didn’t even know existed. If you have ever wondered all the things that the cross represents, it is spelled out for you with corresponding bible verses. It also explains all the different types of symbols and letters and the whole history behind them. The definitions are very easy for anyone to read and understand. My favorite section is on page 4, where I learned about what the Greek letters in “ichthus” stands for in English. This is also a great learning tool for devotion time at the dinner table or before bed, to discuss with your children. Other ones that really interested me were the Lion of Judah, the anchor and one that really surprised me was the pelican, you must find out for yourself. This pamphlet and all the Rose Publishing pamphlets, and I own several, are a terrific addition to my bible study library.

Christian symbols have been used by Christians from the very beginning of the church.. The cross, the fish, the anchor plus a lot of others, but do you know what they mean. In this new full colored and illustrated pamphlet, you will see many different symbols used by Christians and a short history behind the symbols. An example is the cross, which can represent many things, including victory, discipleship, Christ’s love and reconciliation. There are symbols for the trinity and different Christian and Biblical imagery that you may not know the meaning. This pamphlet will show the different symbols and a definition for each. The definitions are very easy to understand. Discussion questions are offered for family studies and group studies. I believe this pamphlet would be a asset to anyone's reference books and library. on 5/26/2016 Very good resource of symbols
As a teenager in the Baptist church we worked with styrofoam and glass gold beads to create Chrismon ornaments from the patterns developed by Mrs. Frances Kipps Spencer. My ladies group at church decided that we would make Chrismon ornaments for our sanctuary tree. In the past ten years I have rekindled my love for the symbols of Christ and use only those to decorate my Christmas tree. A local suppliers in Salisbury, NC sells the patterns, church kits, and individual ornaments kits. It is exciting to visit churches around the area and see the symbols of Christ decorating the huge Christmas trees. The church where I teach a ladies bible study has two gorgeous tree literally covered in symbols. Their Chrismon of the Hand of God is very elaborate and detailed. Someone asked me what it represented. Now I know. Also on their tree was and orb and cross/Triumphant Cross. Just this year I determined to add to my collection. The triquetra, also called the Trinity Knot, was fashioned in white pearls and another in gold beads. A Lamb of God/Agnus Dei is one of my favorites, a crown, and star of David were new to my tree this year. This pamphlet is such a useful tool for teaching others about the life of Christ through symbols. To think Emperor Constantine promoted the Chi Roi by having the symbol painted on the soldiers’ shields as they entered the battle to reclaim Rome. One of my favorite symbols is the Ichthus using the Greek word for fish as an acrostic for Jesus Christ, God’s Son, Savior. I jumped at the chance to review this pamphlet on Christian symbols. Thank you Rose Publishing for giving me this pamphlet in a pdf file.
on 5/21/2016 Product Review: 50 Christian Symbols & Their Meanings
The idea of creating a visual designs to represent concepts, ideologies, organizations, or something abstract is centuries old. We are dependent upon symbols to convey warning, authenticity, emotions, affiliations, and organizations. Jessica Curiel, author of “50 Christian Symbols & Their Meanings”, explores popular and commonly known Christian symbols providing their meaning and history. According to Curiel, Christian symbols are used do denote people as Believers or Followers of Christ, aid in Worship, and act a reminders to biblical truths. Christian Symbols are not limited to objects, but include Christograms (monograms denoting Christ) or Christian and Biblical imagery. As with the symbols that we use in social media and texting, some of them have multiple meanings based upon time period and culture. For example, in the Bible the rainbow represents God’s covenant not to send a worldwide flood again. However, the rainbow has been adopted by different demographics to denote proponents of diversity. In times of persecution, the Christian Fish was used by Christian to discreetly identify other Believers. A Believer would draw half of the Christian Fish in the dirt if the other person knew the symbol they would complete the drawing. This publications does not provide an exhausted list of Christian symbols but highlights the most properly ones. This pamphlet is ideal to teach new Believers about Christian Symbolism. I would like to see more on this topic. I would recommend it for small group or Sunday School.
