10 Questions & Answers about Seventh-day Adventism

First, be assured that the pamphlet is not the product of "hearsay" or careless or superficial research, nor was it intended to give personal offense to you or any other individual. We are not making a judgment as to whether any individual Adventist is saved or is truly a Christian; we are mainly contrasting the teachings of Seventh-day Adventism with historic Christian doctrines.

Second, we encourage Adventists to consult the nearly two dozen documented sources cited by the authors, as we have. (In preparing the pamphlet they referred exhaustively to current SDA publications, including the current edition of Seventh-day Adventists Believe and documents from The White Estate, besides numerous other official sources, including the official Seventh-day Adventist website, the church's Sabbath School Bible Study Guide, the republished Questions on Doctrine, works by Ellen White, and various others.) While you may personally disagree with the conclusions of the authors-who were active, lifelong Adventists well into adulthood-we can state with confidence that they have been careful not to misrepresent the Adventist church's current and historic views.

Third, we should note that the pamphlet's general editor (who worked closely with the authors), Paul Carden, served at the Christian Research Institute under Walter Martin for nearly a decade and has over 30 years' experience in researching and responding to cultic movements here and abroad. Also, one of our uncredited manuscript consultants has been researching primary Adventist sources for decades and maintains an enormous collection of the church's books and periodicals. Having done "due diligence," we are confident that all of the pamphlets citations accurately reflect the context of the sources from which they were drawn.

Fourth, regarding abortion, the authors reply:

While Adventism has "never officially endorsed abortion," it is openly pro-choice. The official Adventist statement on abortion may be found here: www.adventist.org/beliefs/guidelines/main-guide1.html

Here are some quotes from the official statement (emphasis added):

"God's ideal for human beings affirms the sanctity of human life, in God's image, and requires respect for prenatal life. However, decisions about life must be made in the context of a fallen world. Abortion is never an action of little moral consequence. Thus prenatal life must not be thoughtlessly destroyed. Abortion should be performed only for the most serious reasons."

"Women, at times however, may face exceptional circumstances that present serious moral or medical dilemmas, such as significant threats to the pregnant woman's life, serious jeopardy to her health, severe congenital defects carefully diagnosed in the fetus, and pregnancy resulting from rape or incest. The final decision whether to terminate the pregnancy or not should be made by the pregnant woman after appropriate consultation."

"Therefore, any attempts to coerce women either to remain pregnant or to terminate pregnancy should be rejected as infringements of personal freedom."

"Church institutions should be provided with guidelines for developing their own institutional policies in harmony with this statement. Persons having a religious or ethical objection to abortion should not be required to participate in the performance of abortions."

Finally, regarding Ellen G. White, the Adventist church's fundamental belief #18 states in part: "One of the gifts of the Holy Spirit is prophecy. This gift is an identifying mark of the remnant church and was manifested in the ministry of Ellen. G. White. As the Lord's messenger, her writings are a continuing and authoritative source of truth which provide for the church comfort, guidance, instruction, and correction." A "source" is a place of origin, and as the pamphlet demonstrates, having a prophet outside of Scripture who functions actively as a "continuing and authoritative source of truth" is fundamentally contrary to "Sola Scriptura," no matter how her role may be characterized.

The Adventist church's distinctive teachings on the "great controversy theme," its views of Jesus and the Trinity, its "investigative judgment" doctrine, worship on Sunday as the mark of the beast, and many other issues concern us deeply-as they do other Christians around the world.
